The ET-2A control is solely intended to be used in cottages and country houses equipped with adequate thermal insulation.
Your ET-2A will respond equally well to double-ring party lines and single-ring private lines.
Heating efficiency depends mostly on the quality of the thermal insulation of your cottage or country house, as well as on the location of the house, the location of the baseboard heaters within, ventilation and the number of open or closed room doors.
When leaving your country house, you can save by reducing heating. The ET-2A is designed to work at sub-zero temperatures, however, you must leave some heating on to prevent freezing from causing damage to your propert and splitting the water pipes. Some heating must be maintained close to water pipes (especially in the basement), in the kitchen, bathrooms and near the water entrance.
Leaving the temperature set at 15ºC (60ºF) in these areas of the cottage reduces the risk of damage caused b freezing. We advise that you leave open the doors of the cupboards under sinks. As well, you should open doors to all rooms and closets of the cottage.
The ET-2A itself can switch on several baseboard heaters up a nominal power of 6,000 W, or 24 A at 240 VAC. For higher switched power see application diagrams. The controlled heaters will be switched on for exactly four or eight hours. Once this cycle has completed, you may start it again. This can prove useful during extremely cold weather.
Your ET-2A can also be used to switch a single baseboard heater or a 120VAC wall unit air conditioner.
IF A UNIT IS RETURNED MODIFIED OR WITHOUT ITS ORIGINAL PACKAGING, IT WILL BE REFUSED.
Perform this test, step by step, before proceeding to the installation as it will reveal an malfunctions in the unit. Do not open the unit to perform this test.
1-Insert the AC adaptor's plug into the circular DC jack (marked 12VDC) located on top of the unit.
2-Plug the adaptor into a 120 VAC, 60 Hz outlet in the same room where the telephone is located.
3-Set the switch located on top of the ET-2A to "ABSENCE".
4-Speak or make noise and the red indicator shyould light.
5-Set the switch to "PRESENCE": you should hear a click. Set it back to "ABSENCE": you should hear a click again.
6-Place the ET-2A within 5 meters (17 feet) of the telephone and as far away as possible from noise producing appliances.(The ET-2A "listens" to the phone rings: there must not be an closed doors between it and the telephone.)
7-Set the telephone ringer to maximum volume. You may lower it if the ET-2A is very sensitive. (Check the response of the red indicator to the telephone rings)
8-Ask someone to phone you in the following manner: (Avoid making an noises so as not to confuse the unit.)
First call: let the phone ring six times then hang up. (If you have a party line, six double rings)
9-Wait approximately 3 seconds, then re-dial.
Second call: again, let the phone ring six times then hang up. (If you have a party line, six double rings)
10-about 8 seconds after the last ring of the second call, you will hear "click" and the red indicator will remain on.
11-Unplug the AC adaptor and disconnect it from the top of the ET-2A
THE UNIT IS OPERATIONAL, YOU CAN NOW PROCEED WITH THE FOLLOWING STEPS.
Remove screw from top of the ET-2A and separate the front panel from the back metal box. Set the "4-8 hour" switch located on left hand side of PC board to the number of preheating hours you desire. Switch is Factor set to 8 hours (down position).
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL THE ET-2A YOURSELF. RATHER CONTACT A QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN AND THE APPROPRIATE ELECTRIC INSPECTION AUTHORITY, OR A CERTIFIED ELECTRICIAN, AS NECESSARY. INSTALLATION #1 (for small cottages equipped with baseboard hearters "TOTAL HEATING POWER OF 12 Kw").
Refer to drawing (Installation #1).Divide the baseboard heaters of the cottage into two groups: group one will maintain the minimum heating; group two will be remotely controlled by telephone.
MINIMUM HEATING (50% of the baseboard heaters)
These baseboard heaters will NOT be remote-controlled and will maintain the economy temperature during absence. The location of these heaters is very important (see "Applications" above). For safety, choose baseboard heaters protected by 2 or 3 different circuit breakers. In case one circuit breaker trips, one or two other heating circuits will provide a MINIMUM HEATING in the cottage.
The thermostats on these baseboard heaters must be identified and set to 15ºC (60ºF) during your absence. When you return, you may reset these thermostats to a comfortable temperature
REMOTE-CONTROLLED HEATING SWITCHED BY ET-2A. (50% Of the baseboard heaters)
The ET-2A can switch many baseboard heaters up a nominal power of 6,000 watts, or 24 Amperes at 240 VAC to be connected to ONE bipolar circuit breaker of 30 Amperes in the distribution panel.Select those to be connected to the ET-2A according to room size and occupancy (see "APPLICATIONS" & "INSTALLATION #1" drawing). Although these rooms will not be heated during absence, their thermostats must remain set at a comfortable temperature. When leaving for a prolonged absence, set the "ABSENCE/PRESENCE" switch on ET-2A to "ABSENCE".This enables remote control by phone. When you return, set this switch to "PRESENCE": this restores control to the room thermostats and disables remote control. Please note that the switching device ET-2A is not a thermostat.
INSTALLATION #2 (for small cottages equipped with baseboard hearters "TOTAL HEATING POWER OF 12 Kw").
Refer to drawing (Installation #2).This Installation is identical to INSTALLATION #1 with the exception of an added line voltage setback thermostat to be connected and to bypass the ET-2A output contact.Set this setback line voltage thermostat alwas to 15ºC (60ºF).During your absence, it will provide some heating even in the areas of the cottage controlled by the ET-2A.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR INSTALLATION #2: The total switched power of the ET-2A in this installation must not exceed the maximum rated power of the line voltage added setback thermostat. Most of these line voltage thermostats are rated for a maximum resistive load of 5000 W @ 240 VAC. Please note that the switching device ET-2A is not a thermostat.
INSTALLATION #3 (for medium and large cottages equipped with baseboard heaters).
Refer to drawing (Installation #3). This installation is recommended for cottages having a total heating power grater than 12000 Watts. This installation uses the ET-2A as a low voltage control to activate TWO or MORE identical thermal power relays rated 25 Amps @ 240 V (RESISTIVE LOAD ONLY). In the proximity of the distribution panel, the power contact of each relay has to be wired in series with one pole of the bipolar circuit breaker protecting each electric heating circuit. To built an electrical barrier between each 240V switched circuit, an electrical standard junction box should be used to contain and protect each power relay and its connections with the appropriate circuit breaker.
To prevent freezing in the cottage, an additional low voltage thermostat is used to bypass the ET-2A output contact during your absence. This setback low voltage thermostat has to be alwas set to 15ºC (60ºF). The setback thermostat has to be installed at the main floor on a wall located in the center of the cottage, 1,6 meters (5 feet) from the floor and never directly facing to the sun (use dry-wall caulking around the wires to obstruct cold air circulation from the wall). Install the ET-2A vertically lined with the setback thermostat at 30cm (1 foot) from the floor. Please note that the switching device ET-2A is not a thermostat.
INSTALLATION #4 (for medium and large cottage equipped with baseboard heaters).
Refer to drawing (Installation #4).This Installation is identical to INSTALLATION #3 with the exception of the addition of a low voltage control relay and the addition of a thermal power relay to switch ON the HOT WATER TANK in the cottage. Please note that the switching device ET-2A is not a thermostat.
INSTALLATION #5 (for medium and large cottage equipped with central air heating)
Refer to drawing (Installation #5).The ET-2A output contact has to be wired in series with the original low voltage thermostat of the cottage. To prevent freezing in the cottage an additional low voltage thermostat has to be connected to bypass the ET-2A output contact during your absence. This setback thermostat has to be always set to 15ºC (60ºF). The setback thermostat has to be installed horizontally on line close to the original thermostat (use dry-wall caulking around the wires to obstruct cold air circulation from the wall).Install the ET-2A vertically lined with the original thermostat at 1 foot from the floor. Please note that the switching device ET-2A is not a thermostat.
INSTALLATION #6 (Switching an air conditioning window or wall unit with the ET-2A)
Refer to drawing (Installation #6).Should you desire to cool one room or area in your country house prior to your arrival, you can mount the ET-2A to electrically interlock a 120V standard outlet in this room or area. The air conditioning unit only should be plugged in this controlled outlet. Put the telephone in this room (to control the ET-2A) and keep the door closed to allow ET-2A to cool the room to a comfortable level.
NOTE: Because an air conditioner produces interfering noise, the ET-2A can only be reactivated after the 4 or 8 hour cycle is complete.
INSTALLATION #7 (Switching a single baseboard heater with the ET-2A)
Refer to drawing (Installation #7). Should you desire to heat only one room or area in your countr house prior to your arrival (the children's room for instance), you can mount the ET-2A close to the baseboard heater in this room or area.
Make sure this area or room has no water pipes in it's ceiling or floor since it will not be heated during absence. Remove objects that freezing could damage. Keep the telephone in this room (to control the ET-2A) and keep the door closed to allow ET-2A to raise the temperature to a comfortable level. Please note that the switching device ET-2A is not a thermostat.
For prolonged absences (12 hours or more), or in the event of an electrical power failure, we advise that you completely empty all of the water pipes and remove the water from toilet bowls. (Curved pipe legs may trap some water).you should also switch OFF the water heater and pump motors. (Some insurance policies do not cover damage caused by pipe breakage occurring during a prolonged absence.)
For finished basements, make sure that air-convection grills in the ceiling and corresponding grills on the main floor allow air to circulate between the ceiling and the floor to protect the running pipes near windows. Grill dimensions should be 10cm X 15cm (4" x 6").
Cottagers who typically turn off the heat completely and assume the risk of propert damage caused by freezing may use the ET-2A up to a low limit temperature of -25ºC or -13ºF; however, the user is fully responsible for an damage resulting from possible freezing. Please note that the switching device ET-2A is not a thermostat.
Be sure the AC adaptor is plugged into both the power outlet and the ET-2A.
BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE COTTAGE be sure:
a) The switch located on the top of the ET-2A is in the ABSENCE position.
b) Safety considerations are respected.
WHEN YOU ARRIVE TO THE COTTAGE always put the switch located on the top of the ET-2A in the PRESENCE position.
HOW TO TRIGGER THE ET-2A BY TELEPHONE.
Four or eight hours before you plan to arrive at the cottage, dial the CORRECT telephone number of your cottage:
The ET-2A is now triggered without costing you an long distance charges.
